Wales Business News – Solar developer Lightsource BP is about to submit a planning application for a vast solar farm and energy storage project on the Plas Power Estate in Wrexham.
Lightsource BP is the largest solar developer in Europe and the third largest in the world outside of China and it is seeking planning permission to develop around 336 acres of land on the Plas Power Estate in Wrexham for a 57MW scheme, which if approved, could power some 22,700 homes per year.
The proposed site comprises several agricultural fields, primarily used for pasture grazing on land to the west of the A483 and with additional parcels of land to the north and south of the A525 Ruthin Road, approximately one mile to the west of the Wrexham Maelor Hospital and less than 2 miles to the west of Wrexham city centre.
The scheme, known as Plas Power Solar and Energy Project, is classed as a Development of National Significance and its planning application is due to be submitted in early June to the Planning and Environment Decisions Wales (PEDW) rather than to the local council.
The Project includes the construction and operation of a solar photovoltaic electricity generating station, a Battery Energy Storage System (‘BESS’) and associated ancillary development. At the end of the Proposed Developments 40-year life it will be decommissioned, dismantled and removed with the site being restored.
As the Solar developer Lightsource BP scheme is classed as a Development of National Significance its consideration is of huge national importance to Wales and as such the Planning and Environment Decisions Wales (PEDW) will review it and make a recommendation to Welsh Ministers on whether or not to grant planning permission.
